Entering photo contests is a great way to get exposure for your pictures and perhaps earn some money for a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place showing. If a photo contest doesn't offer cash prizes, it almost always will offer some kind of prize to the winner(s). Some contests have separate entries for amateurs and professionals. Some are limited to amateurs. Remember that if you are selling your 'stock photographs', you may not qualify as an amateur.
So where are these photo contests? A few reputable ones are National Geographic and its sister publications from the National Geographic Society . They regularly sponsor photo contests.
The Everyman contest awards cash prizes and it's a good one to start with. Another one to enter is the Smithsonian magazine.
